The Open Reading Area: Our Favourite Hidden Corner of the Resort
Every resort has its showpiece spaces — the grand lobby, the signature restaurant, the infinity pool with its impossible view. These are the spaces that appear in photographs and brochures, the spaces that first-time visitors seek out and check off. They matter, and we are proud of ours.
But we are most proud of the spaces that are not in the brochure.
At Kasauli Hills Resort, the space that generates the most quietly devoted conversation among returning guests is the Open Reading Area — a corner of the property that was designed not for drama but for stillness.
What It Is
The Open Reading Area is a sheltered, open-sided space at the edge of the resort grounds, positioned on a gentle slope that overlooks a dense section of pine forest. It is furnished simply: comfortable armchairs and daybeds with cushions in earthy, mountain-appropriate tones, low tables, a few potted plants, and soft overhead light for evenings.
A small curated library shelf holds a rotating selection of books — novels, travel writing, nature essays, Himalayan exploration accounts, Himachali poetry in translation, and a changing selection of magazines. Guests are welcome to read anything on the shelf, leave a book they have finished, and add to the collection if they wish. Several of the most interesting titles in the current collection were left by previous guests with handwritten notes on the inside cover recommending the read. That community of readers connected across time is, we think, quietly wonderful.
Why It Works
The reading area works because of what it does not have. No television. No piped music. No organised activity. No waiters hovering. The only sound is the pine forest — wind through needles, birdsong, the occasional rustle of an unseen creature in the undergrowth.
In a resort environment designed to offer experiences and activities, this is a radical act of restraint. We are deliberately offering you the experience of doing nothing in particular, in a beautiful place, with a book or simply your own thoughts.
Many guests walk past the reading area on their first day, registering it without stopping. On the second day, they sit for a few minutes. By the third day, they have claimed a favourite chair and are spending entire afternoons there.
Who Loves It Most
The reading area attracts a particular kind of guest: the solo traveller seeking genuine solitude rather than enforced sociability; the couple that has reached the comfortable stage where being in the same space without speaking is its own form of intimacy; the parent who has organised a family trip with activities for everyone else and wants just one hour that belongs to them.
Writers who come to the mountains for clarity and often come to Kasauli Hills Resort have told us they do some of their best thinking in the reading area. Not writing — thinking. Looking at trees and thinking about what they want to write. Then writing, somewhere else, what the trees helped them understand.
An Invitation
If you visit Kasauli Hills Resort and find yourself with an afternoon, resist the impulse to fill it with activity. Instead, follow the path toward the pine slope, take the chair that looks like it was waiting for you, open a book or don’t, and let the forest do what forests do best.
We think you will find, as many of our guests have found before you, that the hidden corner is sometimes the heart of the whole place.
