Delhi to Kasauli: The Ultimate Road Trip Guide

The road from Delhi to Kasauli is one of the finest drives in northern India — close enough to be a weekend trip but varied enough in landscape and terrain to feel like a proper journey. Flat plains give way to foothills, foothills rise into mountains, and somewhere along the way, the air changes. Cleaner, cooler, carrying the faint scent of pine and possibility.

This guide covers everything you need to know to make the drive excellent.

Route Options

The most direct route from Delhi to Kasauli covers approximately 300 kilometres and takes around 5.5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic and the time of departure. The recommended route follows:

Delhi → NH44 (towards Ambala) → Zirakpur → Kalka → Dharampur → Kasauli.

The NH44 is a well-maintained, predominantly four-lane highway until Ambala and then Zirakpur (on the outskirts of Chandigarh). From Zirakpur, take the road towards Kalka and then follow signs for Dharampur. After Dharampur, the mountain roads begin — narrow, winding, and beautiful.

An alternative route takes you through Chandigarh city itself, which adds time but allows you to stop for a meal or supplies in a proper urban centre before the mountain stretch.

When to Leave

Leave Delhi before 6 AM if you want to avoid the city traffic and reach the mountains by early afternoon. Departing at or after 8 AM means navigating heavy Delhi morning traffic and adds meaningful time to the journey.

A 6 AM departure typically puts you in Kasauli by noon to 1 PM — time for a proper lunch at the resort before the afternoon opens up.

What to Carry in the Car

Mountain roads require a prepared vehicle. Check tyre pressure and tread, ensure your brakes are in good condition, and top up your fuel before Kalka since options become limited in the mountains. Carry water, some snacks, and car sickness medication if anyone in your group is susceptible — the winding mountain roads between Dharampur and Kasauli involve enough curves to affect sensitive passengers.

A physical map or downloaded offline map is advisable since mobile data can be patchy between Kalka and Kasauli.

Stops Worth Making

Kalka: A small city at the base of the mountains, Kalka is home to the famous Kalka-Shimla Narrow Gauge Railway — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you have children or a love of trains, a brief stop to walk the platform and watch a narrow gauge train is highly worthwhile.

Dharampur: A functional town about 20 kilometres before Kasauli. Stock up on any essentials, use the ATM, and fill your tank.

Timber Trail Heights: A brief detour off the main Kasauli road leads to the Timber Trail resort and its famous ropeway. On clear days, the ropeway offers sweeping valley views. A worthwhile 30-minute stop.

The Mountain Roads

From Dharampur, the road climbs steadily through pine forests and small villages. These are two-lane mountain roads with hairpin bends, occasional truck traffic, and absolutely spectacular scenery. Drive slowly, use your horn at blind corners (local custom and genuine safety practice), and do not attempt to rush this section. The mountains reward patience.

Arriving in Kasauli

Private vehicles are restricted in parts of Kasauli cantonment. Parking is available at designated areas near the main entrance; from there, local transport or the resort’s pickup service takes you to your destination.

At Kasauli Hills Resort, our team can arrange to receive you at the designated area and assist with your luggage before the golf cart welcome begins. Simply call ahead when you are 30 minutes out.

The drive back to Delhi, like most mountain drives, feels shorter on the return. But for a few hours, the mountains have you. Enjoy every curve.
